Advocating for the library

For the most part, being a FOFL is a lot of fundraising fun and games, but it’s also incredibly important to us, as a dedicated group of library users and volunteers, to advocate for the library and its staff, not only to Frome residents but also to Somerset Council, after all it is their legal duty under the Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964 to provide a comprehensive and efficient public library service.

So with a fair bit of trepidation on my part, myself and Julie (FOFL Secretary) attended Frome Town Council’s monthly meeting on the evening of Wednesday 9th September, to make them aware of concerns regarding the library.

This summer has definitely been somewhat of a challenge for the library; with an unplanned closure due to a blocked fire exit, another rejected window cleaning request from Somerset Council (it’s been at least 2 years since they were last cleaned), questionable contractors (duly reported) and the inevitable winter heating concerns (there’s only so many gloves the librarians can wear - try shelving or typing with 3 pairs of gloves on. Go on, I dare ya).

Whilst Frome Town Council (FTC) does not have any jurisdiction over the library, we felt it was important that FTC were made aware of the issues that are facing one of the town’s most important public buildings. We welcome the support that we received in the chamber, particularly from Somerset Councilor Martin Dimery, and truly hope that active measures are taken to address the concerns we raised. After all, words of support aren’t going to clean the windows or keep the library warm once winter kicks in…
